Chapter 217: Poaching

Chapter 217: Poaching

Before the dawn arrived, the Dewhurst was already bursting in an uproar. The guards were rushing and all around, and people were talking hushed tones. The murder of the Grand Spire’s manager had already spread throughout the district and beyond.

The district magistrate had taken action as soon as he heard the news, but the killer was nowhere to be found. They had interrogated the woman who was spending night with the manager, but couldn’t determine the man-slayer.

The Grand Spire was closed and barricades had been formed around it. No one was allowed to enter.

"What?" said one man, looking at a guard. "The Grand Spire won’t open for an undetermined period of time."

"There are only three days left for the academy competition. I need a magic sword, now," said another man, protesting.

"Sorry, sir," said the guard politely. "The manager was killed the previous night, and we are still searching for the killer. There won’t be any business for the time being."

"Hey, you know what," a passerby said, "if you want to buy a good artifact, at a lower price, you can go to the Heaven’s Door."

The people who were arguing with the guard turned towards the passerby, one them asked, "Brother, do you a shop that would sell the artifact whose quality matches Grand Spire’s?"

The passerby smiled. "Not only the artifacts would match the quality of Grand Spire, they are cheaper than the Grand Spire’s."

"Really, are you telling us the truth?" said another man, eyes shining.

"Of course," said the passerby. "Why would I lie to you? I’m also going to Heaven’s Door—if you want, you tag along with me."

"Sure," said the people in unison.

The passerby curled his lips and led the people towards Heaven’s Door. The guard looking at the people confusedly, not understanding what had just happened.

"Good work," said Kadyn to Dion who grinned, looking at the crowded shop. Dion was the man who led the people from Grand Spire to here.

"Anyway, boss," said Dion, fawningly. "Do you know anything about the murder of Grand Spire’s manager?"

Kadyn eyed him and said, "Don’t try to act smart in front of me. There are a lot of customers today. Hayla is having a hard time dealing with them, go help her."

"Oh," Dion grinned, staring towards Hayla. "Of course, boss." And rushed to help her.

Kadyn shook his head. He eyed Cecelia descending the stairs. "How many Unique herbs did you find?"

"There are about thousand Special herbs, hundred Unique herbs, and nine Rare herbs."

"Nine Rare herbs?" Kadyn’s eyes lit up. He had just broken through to the Mature Stage, and was eager to refine the Rare grade potion. "Good. Have you enough rest?"

Cecelia nodded. "Do you need me to do anything?"

Kadyn said, "I want you to report everything about the investigation going on regarding the manager of Grand Spire."

"Did something happen?" she asked, as she had no idea about the murder. Kadyn filled her about the situation before saying, "I want you to report everything to me that they uncover. Alright?"

Inspiration dawned on Cecelia, she eyed Kadyn and asked, "Does this murder has something to do with you?"

"Well, you are too smart to ask a question of this caliber," he winked at her and said. "Go."

"Boss, I want to buy this potion," said a voice as soon as Cecelia vanished.

Kadyn lifted his head and found Gelna standing in front of his counter. The fox sister’s were also with her. Kadyn smiled and said, "So where is your competition?"

"In three days," said Gelna. "I earned some money and wanted to buy a potion that could help me win a higher rank in the competition. Never thought I will see so much crowd in your shop."

"Two hundred thousand Shims," said Kadyn. Then he said, "It is nothing, you find a few kilometer long line in front of my shop in a few more days."

Gelna smiled and the fox sister’s chuckled, covering their mouth to control the laughter that was about to escape out of their mouths. If it was some time ago Gelna would have thought him young, arrogant, and inexperienced, but now, she could see the change with her own eyes. She believed every word that Kadyn spoke.

"We want two Affinity Increasing Potions," said Arilie, the older fox sister. "One is fire and the other is water."

"You are quite the unusual kind," said Kadyn to the sisters. "If you use your strength together you can suppress mages stronger than you by one or two minor levels."

"Thank you, boss," said the sisters in their soothing voices, pleasant to hear the compliment from him.

"Alright," Kadyn said. ’If you three were unable to enter the academy—I will give you a job in my shop."

The expression on duo’s face froze while Gelna turned to look at him. "Why do you say it, boss?" asked Gelna. "I’m already Creation Stage mage. Do you think I won’t be able to enter the academy?"

Kadyn shook his head. "Your thinking is too straightforward," he said. "The academy is not as noble as you think. It is controlled by some very arrogant and ambitious people who want their own to dominate it. People like you, who came from small clans—" he shook his head, not speaking any more.

Actually he had already started to gather information about the strongest forces of Vrilas. Whether it was World Magic Alliance, or Magic Alliance Academy, or Elven Potion, or Grand Spire, or any such organizations, he knew many things about them that normal people won’t know.

After all he had people who were quite proficient in information gathering. Though he had left Slyff behind, he still had Cecelia.

"Alright," said Gelna with a stiff expression. "We will take our leave, then."

And they walked away. To enter the academy was their long lasting dream, however, hearing such words about the academy from Kadyn made their stomach churn. They could not digest it. Though they respected Kadyn that’s why they refrained from arguing with him.
